A museum in Germany experienced an unexpected influx of Taylor Swift fans due to a painting that strongly resembles a scene from Swift’s latest hit music video, “The Fate of Ophelia.” The Hessische Landesmuseum in Wiesbaden saw a surge in visitors, including families traveling from various cities just to see the painting. American families from a nearby U.S. army base also joined the crowd.
The fans, known as Swifties, flocked to view an Art Nouveau painting by Friedrich Heyser depicting Ophelia, a character from Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.” Ophelia, a noblewoman who meets a tragic end in the play, is portrayed in Heyser’s painting surrounded by white water lilies. Although the exact year of creation is uncertain, experts estimate the painting to be from around 1900.
In Swift’s music video, she embodies the character of Ophelia, resembling the depiction in Heyser’s painting. The museum’s director noted the similarities between Swift’s video and the artwork. The museum staff noticed the resemblance and decided to organize a special tour for Swift fans, which quickly gained viral attention online.
The museum is embracing the newfound attention, offering a free tour to fans dressed as either Taylor Swift or Ophelia on November 2. Despite attempts to reach out to Swift, the museum has not yet made contact with the singer. The museum director expressed a desire to show Swift the original painting, emphasizing the opportunity to draw new visitors to the museum.
While it remains unclear if Swift directly drew inspiration from the painting for her song, “The Fate of Ophelia” has topped charts in both Germany and the United States, garnering widespread acclaim.
