“Trail Guide Experience Redefines Success”

Date:

Growing up, the conventional path to success was ingrained in me — attend university, secure a job in your field, marry, buy a house, and start a family. This trajectory, passed down from my parents, was reiterated by the high school guidance counselor as the key to a fulfilling life. In 2016, while pursuing my biomedical engineering degree at the University of Guelph, I was on track with this plan.

Following the academic year, my goal was to land a summer engineering job to enhance my resume. Despite unsuccessful attempts in Ontario, I unexpectedly found employment at a horseback trail riding outfit in Banff National Park. This deviation from my intended path led me to explore the majestic Rockies on horseback, fulfilling my childhood dream of riding in the mountains.

My experience as a trail guide broadened my perspective on what constitutes a fulfilling life. It taught me to appreciate simple moments, from serene mornings to enduring challenging days with the promise of cozying up by the fire later. Moreover, seasonal work introduced me to remarkable individuals who redefined my notion of success.

The friendships forged during my time as a seasonal worker were unlike any I had encountered before. Living and working closely with colleagues for extended periods created deep and enduring bonds. Some of my closest friends, like Katie and Phil from Australia, remain integral parts of my life, showcasing the lasting impact of those connections.

While bidding farewell to these friends was always difficult due to the transient nature of seasonal work, the experience reshaped my understanding of success. It highlighted the myriad paths one can take to find fulfillment and emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with positivity and goodness.

Despite initial reservations from my family about deviating from my engineering background, they eventually recognized the value of my seasonal work experiences in shaping my personal and professional growth. Today, working in international sales allows me to continue exploring the world, a journey made possible by the confidence and skills gained during my time as a guide.

Though my current career path diverges from the traditional engineering trajectory, I have found immense satisfaction in following my passions and crafting a life that resonates with me. Embracing change and pursuing new experiences have been pivotal lessons from my seasonal work adventures, emphasizing the essence of exploration, novelty, and enjoyment in living a fulfilling life.
