“Trump Threatens to Move World Cup Matches from Boston”

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning to potentially relocate World Cup matches scheduled to take place in suburban Boston next year, citing concerns of unrest in certain parts of the city. Foxborough, Massachusetts, where the NFL’s New England Patriots play, is slated to host games as part of the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will cohost with Mexico and Canada. Trump expressed criticism of Boston’s mayor, Michelle Wu, labeling her as “intelligent” but “radical left.”

During a meeting with Argentina President Javier Milei, Trump raised the possibility of moving the World Cup games, claiming that parts of Boston had been “taken over.” While specifics were not provided, recent incidents, such as arrests related to a violent pro-Palestinian protest in Boston Common, may have fueled Trump’s concerns.

Despite Trump’s assertions, the ultimate decision on World Cup host sites rests with FIFA, the governing body of soccer. FIFA has already finalized hosting plans for the tournament, which include games at various NFL stadiums across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. FIFA’s vice-president, Victor Montagliani, emphasized the organization’s authority over such matters and the challenges involved in making significant changes close to the event’s kickoff.

While Trump suggested he could appeal to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to relocate games if safety concerns persisted, the final say remains with FIFA. Infantino, a trusted ally of Trump, was mentioned as a key figure in any potential relocation discussions. However, any changes to the agreed-upon hosting arrangements would pose logistical and legal hurdles for FIFA in the months leading up to the tournament.

Trump’s remarks, although indicative of his willingness to intervene if necessary, do not override FIFA’s jurisdiction and decision-making authority regarding the World Cup.
