U.S. President Donald Trump proposed utilizing American cities for military training purposes during a speech to military officials in Quantico, Va. Trump emphasized the need for the military to address what he called “the invasion from within” domestically rather than overseas.
He criticized cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, citing them as unsafe due to policies by radical left Democrats. Trump’s comments about using the military in cities governed by Democrats, including Portland and Chicago, have sparked controversy and legal challenges from state authorities.
Some governors, including Oregon’s Tina Kotek, have disputed Trump’s characterization of cities like Portland as “war zones” and have opposed the deployment of the National Guard. Critics have raised concerns about the unprecedented nature of Trump’s statements about using the military for domestic control.
Despite Trump’s rhetoric, the National Guard is primarily under state control and typically federalized only at the request of the state governor. While Trump has singled out cities like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles for criticism, his threats of military intervention have faced opposition and skepticism from various political figures.
Canadian officials, including former Conservative minister Lisa Raitt and Liberal strategist Dan Moulton, have expressed concerns about Trump’s military proposals, urging preparedness for any potential shifts in U.S. policy towards Canada. While some view Trump’s remarks as alarming, others caution that not all of his bold statements translate into concrete actions.
