“Trump’s Tardiness Sparks Impromptu Summit Talks”

Date:

President Donald Trump’s delayed arrival at a summit in Egypt allowed Prime Minister Mark Carney and other leaders to engage in discussions about the future of Gaza and broader peace prospects in the Middle East, as revealed by a senior Canadian government official familiar with the talks.

Leaders from various countries gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh to witness Trump signing a declaration with the leaders of Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt, advocating for lasting peace and prosperity in the region.

However, Trump’s schedule overrun following his visit to Jerusalem and address to the Israeli Knesset led to his tardiness, prompting a light-hearted comment from Trump about potentially missing the other leaders upon his arrival.

Speaking on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak publicly, the official disclosed that the delay resulted in Carney and other leaders convening an impromptu meeting at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Convention Centre, fostering open and candid dialogue.

The official mentioned that discussions revolved around ways different nations could provide assistance, with French President Emmanuel Macron proposing backing for an international stabilization force for Gaza, a key component of Trump’s 20-point plan for the region.

The source noted Carney’s emphasis on expediting aid delivery into Gaza, highlighting Canada’s preparedness with supplies ready for deployment.

Furthermore, there were discussions on leveraging existing programs such as Operation Proteus, Canada’s contribution to the Office of the Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority, to hasten aid distribution, the official added.

Global Leaders Advocate Swift Aid Action

According to the official, there was a unanimous agreement on the urgent need to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza promptly, stressing the necessity for visible improvements on the ground for Palestinians in the region.

Unlike typical international summits where gradual progress is often discussed, this meeting saw world leaders uniting to strategize urgent action plans, the official shared.

Regarding Trump’s communication style and demeanor, the official mentioned a growing acceptance among leaders, attributing it to Trump’s pivotal role in orchestrating the summit and negotiations.

The official also highlighted the crucial importance of keeping Trump engaged, acknowledging his significant influence in motivating Israeli actions, stressing it as “mission critical.”
