“U.S. Military Strikes Vessel in Drug Operation”

Date:

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday that the American military conducted another operation targeting a vessel suspected of transporting drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of all four individuals on board. This action followed three similar strikes carried out in the same area the day before, which resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts against drug cartels operating in South American waters.

Hegseth, who was on a trip to Japan and Malaysia, revealed via social media that intelligence reports indicated the vessel was traveling along a known drug trafficking route and was carrying narcotics. The strike was executed in international waters with no harm to U.S. personnel. A video shared by Hegseth depicted the boat engulfed in flames and smoke.

The Trump administration has been conducting a sustained campaign in the region, deploying a substantial naval force equipped with Marines and aircraft. Speculation has arisen that these activities may be targeted at removing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom the U.S. has accused of involvement in narcoterrorism. The recent series of strikes, resulting in the deaths of at least 61 individuals, has raised legal concerns among experts.

President Trump has defended the operations as necessary to combat drug trafficking into the U.S., asserting that the country is engaged in an “armed conflict” against drug cartels under legal authority similar to that used following the 9/11 attacks. However, the lack of formal investigations or congressional declarations of war has sparked a debate in Congress over the extent of the president’s powers. Some lawmakers, including members of Trump’s own party, have questioned the justification for these lethal actions.

The administration has not provided concrete evidence to substantiate its claims regarding the targeted vessels, their alleged ties to drug cartels, or the identities of those killed in the strikes. Hegseth’s announcement of the latest strike marks the 14th operation since the campaign commenced.
