As Canada readies to welcome an influx of Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles, a U.S. senator cautions that amid strained Canada-U.S. relations, Canadian authorities should exercise prudence when engaging with the Chinese government.
Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin voiced her views during an interview on “Rosemary Barton Live,” emphasizing the need for caution despite Canada’s efforts to diversify its partnerships. Slotkin, also a former CIA officer, highlighted concerns about potential security risks associated with Chinese-made EVs transmitting sensitive data back to Beijing.
Slotkin, who is attending the 2026 Global Progress Action Summit in Toronto, stressed the importance of distinguishing between economic and national security issues. She, along with a Republican senator from Ohio, has introduced a bill to prohibit the import, sale, and operation of vehicles from China.
Her apprehensions align with those expressed by various Canadian officials and experts regarding cybersecurity risks linked to Chinese-made vehicles. China’s legal framework mandates cooperation between Chinese companies and the government, echoing similar laws like the U.S. Cloud Act.
Despite these concerns, in a recent meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping, a deal was struck allowing a specified number of Chinese EVs into Canada at reduced tariffs. This move has sparked tensions with the U.S., with President Donald Trump issuing warnings about potential tariffs on Canadian goods if ties with China strengthen.
Slotkin emphasized that her state closely monitors the evolving Canada-U.S. trade relationship and disapproves of Canada’s decision to permit Chinese vehicles. The looming deadline for reviewing the North American free trade agreement (CUSMA) adds another layer of complexity to the situation, with ongoing negotiations and unresolved issues between the three nations.
While acknowledging the current strain in Canada-U.S. relations, Slotkin remains optimistic, noting that despite challenges, there are American leaders who value the bond between the two countries.
