“US Tariffs Devastate Indian Shrimp Industry”

Date:

A group of twelve men playfully entered a shrimp pond in Andhra Pradesh, India, pulling a net behind them to catch shrimp. Despite the jovial atmosphere, there is underlying worry due to the 50% tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian exports, severely impacting the frozen shrimp industry.

Before the tariffs, the U.S. was the primary market for Indian shrimp exports, accounting for over 40% of the market share, valued at more than $2.5 billion. However, with the tariffs in place, shrimp harvesting has become more sporadic, leading to a halt in shipments to the U.S.

Workers in the industry are facing challenges, with some volunteering for wage cuts and others working even when not required to earn extra income. Praveen Sabbineni, an industry player, highlighted that the prices for harvested shrimp have dropped by almost 40%, prompting many farmers to consider abandoning shrimp farming.

The initial 25% tariff on Indian exports was later doubled to 50% by U.S. President Donald Trump, giving Ecuador a competitive edge with its 15% tariff. This has heightened the struggles faced by Indian shrimp farmers, with many small-scale farmers finding it difficult to sell their produce due to the hefty tariffs.

Efforts to mitigate the impact, such as state government subsidies, have not been sufficient to offset the losses. Farmers like Edukal Basani are contemplating leaving the industry as they struggle to repay loans and cover basic expenses. The situation is dire, especially for women workers in processing plants, where wages are low, and job options are limited.

Indian officials are seeking a trade deal with the U.S. to alleviate the tariff burden, but negotiations face challenges due to disagreements on key issues. The uncertainty surrounding the industry has left many workers anxious about their future, with concerns about financial stability and livelihoods at the forefront.
