Vancouver’s Liron Gertsman achieved his long-held goal of capturing a remarkable bird photo, earning him the title of Bird Photographer of the Year. His award-winning image, taken during a total solar eclipse off the coast of Mexico in 2024, features the silhouette of a frigatebird in flight. Gertsman’s journey into bird photography began at a young age, using a basic camera to snap pictures of birds. Over the years, his passion for wildlife photography grew, eventually leading him to combine his interests in bird photography and astronomy.
Planning meticulously for the total solar eclipse, Gertsman identified the ideal location and timing for the event. By positioning himself on a boat near the coast of Mazatlán, Mexico, during the eclipse, he successfully captured the image he had envisioned. Despite the challenges of photographing from a moving boat, Gertsman’s dedication and preparation paid off as he managed to take the perfect shot of hundreds of frigate birds against the backdrop of the eclipse.
The achievement of being named Bird Photographer of the Year not only recognizes Gertsman’s talent but also highlights the importance of conservation and the beauty of nature. Through his captivating images, including those of other wildlife such as bears and bald eagles, Gertsman aims to raise awareness about the significance of protecting birds and their habitats. Beyond the accolades and cash prize, Gertsman finds fulfillment in using his photography to inspire others and advocate for environmental preservation.
