Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets were reported to have flown above a U.S. navy destroyer in the Caribbean, as confirmed by a U.S. official to Reuters. This action prompted a strong caution from the U.S. to Venezuela against interfering with the escalating U.S. military activities in the region. The incident, stated to have taken place in international waters by the Pentagon, comes shortly after a recent U.S. operation that resulted in the death of 11 individuals aboard a Venezuelan vessel suspected of carrying illicit drugs.
While the U.S. government justifies its actions based on designating the criminal group Tren de Aragua as a terrorist organization, legal experts have expressed doubts regarding the attack. The Pentagon, in a brief statement, likened President Nicolas Maduro’s administration to a drug trafficking syndicate, an assertion that Caracas vehemently denies. President Trump has accused Maduro of leading the Tren de Aragua group.
In response to the F-16 jets’ proximity to a U.S. Navy ship in international waters, the Pentagon labeled it as a provocative maneuver by the Venezuelan regime, cautioning against any further attempts to obstruct U.S. military operations in counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism efforts.
The identity of the Venezuelan military aircraft and their flyover of the USS Jason Dunham were disclosed by an anonymous U.S. official. Reports from The New York Times also cited a U.S. defense official confirming the incident involving the fighter jets passing over the U.S. navy guided-missile destroyer Jason Dunham in the southern Caribbean Sea. The USS Dunham is among a group of at least seven U.S. warships deployed in the Caribbean, housing over 4,500 sailors and marines, a move that has raised concerns from Caracas.
Additionally, U.S. marines and sailors from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit have been engaged in training exercises in southern Puerto Rico. The decision by President Trump to conduct a military strike on a suspected drug-carrying vessel rather than seizing the ship and detaining its crew has drawn attention for its unconventional approach, reminiscent of past U.S. actions against militant organizations like al-Qaeda.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the strike, emphasizing the ongoing threat posed by illegal narcotics to public health in the U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar criticized Trump’s actions in the southern Caribbean as unlawful, highlighting the constitutional authority of Congress in matters of war.
The recent U.S. military operation diverges from conventional practices, with the administration facing scrutiny for not providing evidence of an imminent threat or the presence of armed individuals on the vessel. Legal experts view the attack as a potential extrajudicial killing, raising concerns internationally.
The Venezuelan Communications Ministry has not responded to requests for comments on the incident.
