“Verdict in Burlington Child Welfare Case Sparks Calls for Systemic Change”

Date:

In a recent trial in Burlington, Ontario, a judge delivered a clear verdict, holding Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney responsible for murder and other offenses involving two boys under their care. The judge emphasized that the Children’s Aid Society’s actions or lack thereof did not influence the guilt of Hamber and Cooney. Despite efforts to adopt the boys, concerns have been raised about the child protection system and the need to address systemic issues promptly.

Sherry Saevil, a member of Circle of Beads, an Indigenous advocacy group in Halton region, expressed mixed emotions following the court’s rulings. She highlighted the need for a better future for children, particularly Indigenous youth. The tragic death of one of the boys, L.L., in 2022, and the abuse they endured, shed light on failures within the child welfare system.

The boys, who were previously under the Ottawa CAS’s care, were placed with Cooney and Hamber in Burlington in 2017. Despite numerous reports of mistreatment, the Halton CAS failed to conduct necessary interventions, such as unannounced home visits or speaking with the boys alone. The CAS agencies involved have since made undisclosed changes following L.L.’s death.

Advocates like Saevil have long called for reforms in child welfare practices, especially concerning Indigenous children. They echo the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations, emphasizing the importance of reducing the number of Indigenous children in care and providing culturally appropriate services.

Calls for accountability and systemic changes have intensified following the tragic events involving Hamber and Cooney. Efforts to improve child welfare systems and ensure the safety of vulnerable children are underway, with the hope of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
