“Victorious Film Sweeps Academy Awards”

Date:

“Victorious in Multiple Categories” emerged as the standout film at this year’s Academy Awards, securing the coveted best picture Oscar along with five additional accolades. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” had dominated the nominations with a groundbreaking 16 nods but eventually clinched four wins.

The lead actor of “Sinners,” Michael B. Jordan, secured the best actor award, his debut win on his inaugural nomination, prompting a rousing standing ovation. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley’s portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet” earned her the best actress award after a successful award season, including victories at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film awards.

In a notable Canadian presence, Maggie Kang from Toronto received the best animated feature Oscar for “KPop Demon Hunters,” while Canadian production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, along with Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, shared wins in the makeup and hairstyling category for “Frankenstein.”

Furthermore, Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski were honored with the best animated short film award for “The Girl Who Cried Pearls.” “One Battle After Another,” besides securing the best picture and best supporting actor awards, also earned Paul Thomas Anderson his debut wins for best adapted screenplay and directing, along with victories in editing and casting — a newly introduced Academy Award category after 24 years.

Similarly, “Sinners” amassed four wins, including Ryan Coogler’s triumph for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s victory for best cinematography, marking a historic moment as the first time a racialized woman claimed the award.

The Toronto-filmed “Frankenstein” also clinched three awards, making it a memorable night at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
