WestJet Flight Attendants Threaten Strike

Date:

WestJet’s flight attendants are gearing up for a potential strike starting this Sunday if an agreement is not reached by then, causing concern among passengers.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing WestJet’s 4,400 flight attendants, issued a 72-hour strike notice early on Thursday. In response, WestJet countered with a 72-hour lockout notice.

While the strike notice does not automatically mean flight attendants will go on strike, a union representative mentioned that significant differences still exist between the two sides on key issues.

This situation has left passengers like Ken Wallin anxious about potential flight disruptions.

Wallin and his wife have plans to travel to Ireland for their 29th wedding anniversary on Monday. They have been saving for this trip since they had to cancel their previous vacation due to the pandemic.

The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet says it has issued a 72-hour strike notice, paving the runway for a possible strike during a busy summer travel season. WestJet, in a statement, said the airline responded to the union’s strike notice by issuing a 72-hour lockout notice. A strike could begin as soon as Aug. 2 if the two sides don’t reach a deal.

If the strike affects their flight, it will mean another missed vacation opportunity for Wallin and his wife.

Expressing his concerns, Wallin mentioned that despite exploring other airlines, he has not found any suitable direct flights at a reasonable cost. Although WestJet is allowing passengers with flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4 to change or cancel their bookings without any penalties, Wallin can only receive a travel credit in his case, which is not ideal for him as an infrequent traveler.

“We are hopeful that everything will work out in the end,” Wallin added.
