“White House Begins Unauthorized East Wing Demolition for Trump’s Ballroom Project”

Date:

The White House initiated the dismantling of a section of the East Wing on Monday to make way for President Donald Trump’s $250 million ballroom project, even though it lacks approval from the federal agency overseeing such endeavors. Photos of the demolition captured heavy machinery tearing down the East Wing facade, with debris scattered on the ground. Trump confirmed the construction kick-off in a social media post and mentioned it during a meeting with Louisiana State University’s college baseball champions.

Despite not obtaining clearance from the National Capital Planning Commission, responsible for sanctioning construction and major renovations in Washington, D.C., the White House proceeded with the extensive project. The chair of the commission, Will Scharf, clarified that their jurisdiction does not cover demolition or site preparation on federal properties.

It remains uncertain whether the White House submitted the ballroom plans for review by the relevant agency. Democratic congresswoman Suzan DelBene criticized the renovation on social media, accusing Trump of prioritizing personal projects over critical governmental matters.

The renovation involves modernizing and relocating the East Wing offices temporarily. Contrary to concerns, the White House assured that no structures would be demolished during the construction. Trump defended the construction of the 90,000-square-foot ballroom, citing the need for a larger space to host dignitaries.

The funding for the project is sourced privately, with various companies and individuals contributing. Carrier Global Corp. pledged to donate an energy-efficient HVAC system for the ballroom. Site preparations began in September, aiming to complete the ballroom before Trump’s term concludes in January 2029.
