William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, faced a challenging journey together after being diagnosed with advanced cancer within months of each other. The 95-year-old Canadian actor, renowned for his portrayal of Capt. James T. Kirk on “Star Trek,” disclosed that he battled Stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain in June 2023. Around the same time, Gretsch, aged 61, detected a lump in her breast, which turned out to be cancerous.
During her chemotherapy treatment, Gretsch sought solace from her father, who comforted her by assuring her that this trial would be just a temporary setback in her life. Shatner, upon receiving his own cancer diagnosis, remained composed and expressed gratitude for being diagnosed in time to receive life-saving treatment.
Fortunately, both Shatner and Gretsch have been cancer-free since late 2024, attributing their recoveries to the exceptional medical care they received. Gretsch underwent extensive treatment, including multiple rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation therapy. Shatner underwent surgery to remove a facial tumor and subsequently underwent two years of immunotherapy to combat cancer in his lungs and brain.
The shared experience has left them with a newfound appreciation for life’s simple joys and moments. Shatner expressed gratitude for the beauty of everyday occurrences, such as observing a hummingbird or playing with his dog and children. Despite attempts to reach out to Shatner for comment, CBC News did not receive a response before the article’s publication deadline.
