YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney channels, including ABC and ESPN, due to a failed agreement between the two parties. Along with these channels, other content such as the Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo have disappeared from Google’s pay TV platform.
In a recent blog post, Google’s pay TV platform disclosed that Disney suspended its content as negotiations faltered. This development could impact the coverage of various sports events, including college football, NBA, NFL, and NHL games.
YouTube, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, has faced backlash from viewers regarding the dispute, as warning messages have been displayed on their screens.
According to YouTube, Disney’s blackout threat was a strategic move to secure higher prices for its content, benefiting its streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo. YouTube expressed disappointment for its subscribers and urged Disney to engage in constructive negotiations for a fair resolution.
To compensate for the loss of Disney content, YouTube stated that affected subscribers would receive a $20 credit if the content remains unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription plan for YouTube TV is priced at $82.99 per month.
In response, Disney accused YouTube TV of not offering fair rates for its channels and criticized the denial of valued content to subscribers, especially during a weekend with several Top 25 teams competing. Disney emphasized its commitment to swiftly resolving the situation and criticized Google’s alleged market dominance tactics to stifle competition.
