Three months have passed since the $80 million Lotto Max jackpot was won in London, Ontario, setting a new record. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) revealed that two individuals have stepped forward to claim the prize, with their identities set to be disclosed after the verification process is finalized.
The monumental draw took place on December 30, marking the largest win ever in Ontario, tying the previous record set by the B.C. Lottery Corp. The winners’ names, their connection to each other, and the specific location of the ticket purchase remain undisclosed. The ticket was bought in a store, not via the OLG mobile app, as confirmed by OLG spokesperson Tony Bitonti.
According to Bitonti, winners of substantial prizes like this often take their time before coming forward to process their life-changing windfall. They typically seek advice from family members, financial consultants, and even legal professionals to ensure they are well-prepared for the significant impact of claiming such massive jackpots.
He emphasized the importance of winners promptly signing their tickets to safeguard against potential loss or unauthorized claims. Bitonti also mentioned that OLG has mechanisms to detect when winning tickets are checked using the mobile app, acknowledging that some winners repeatedly verify their tickets out of disbelief.
In instances where winning tickets are damaged, OLG employs a specialized restoration process to reconstruct them for verification purposes. While it is uncommon for significant prizes to remain unclaimed, it does occur occasionally. The OLG website displays unclaimed wins, with the highest being a $40 million prize from last October in “rural Toronto west.”
Despite efforts to encourage ticket holders to check their tickets, some prizes go unclaimed, with funds reverting back into the OLG prize pool. The current Lotto Max draw is approaching the record $80 million jackpot, currently standing at $75 million.
