“Ontario Cracks Down on Ticket Scalpers Violating Price Regulations”

Date:

The Ontario government has initiated actions against ticket scalpers and resale platforms to ensure compliance with recent regulations that limit ticket resale prices to face value. Despite the new rules, some platforms continue to list tickets well above their original price.

Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement Stephen Crawford stated that notifications for inspections were sent out last week, with inspections ongoing this week. The crackdown targets various resellers, including ticket brokers and major companies like StubHub and SeatGeek.

The legislation, part of Ontario’s provincial budget, prohibits the sale or facilitation of ticket resale above their original purchase price. In response, FIFA removed resale World Cup tickets for upcoming Toronto games, while Ticketmaster adjusted its site to prevent listings above face value.

This week’s enforcement activities may involve communication with resellers regarding their practices, requests for records, site visits, and potential fines or charges. Concerned customers can report violations to Consumer Protection Ontario, with fines for infractions ranging from $3,000 to $250,000.

Despite enforcement efforts, some companies are still offering tickets above face value. Platforms like StubHub and SeatGeek display prices significantly higher than face value, prompting scrutiny from regulators. While these companies claim to be working toward compliance, challenges remain in accurately determining face value for resale tickets.

Minister Crawford emphasized the need for companies to swiftly align with the new regulations, warning of consequences for non-compliance. Stakeholders, including experts like Vass Bednar, acknowledge the complexities of enforcing price caps but stress the importance of swift government action to curb ticket price inflation in the market.
