“Trump Halts Trade Talks with Canada Over Reagan Ad”

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the termination of trade discussions with Canada due to an Ontario government advertisement utilizing former President Ronald Reagan’s words to convey an anti-tariff message to an American audience. This development marks the latest disruption in the ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford adopting a more direct approach in appealing to American sentiment compared to federal counterparts.

Reports indicate that Trump’s decision came as a surprise to the Carney government, with sources suggesting that the President’s reaction to the ad was genuine and not part of a larger negotiating strategy. The decision to halt negotiations abruptly had been brewing over several days, culminating in Trump’s announcement.

The Ontario government’s $75-million ad campaign, launched on Tuesday, features excerpts from Reagan’s 1987 radio address emphasizing the negative consequences of high tariffs and trade wars. While the original address also defended specific tariffs on Japan, the ad primarily focuses on Reagan’s broader stance against tariffs. Following the ad’s airing during the Major League Baseball playoffs, Trump publicly acknowledged seeing it and expressed his discontent.

Amidst trade talks between Canada and the U.S., Minister Dominic LeBlanc returned from Washington after engaging in high-level discussions. Optimism regarding a potential deal was reported by The Globe and Mail, suggesting progress towards easing sectoral tariffs. However, Trump’s reaction to the Ontario ad further complicated the negotiations.

Despite the fallout from the ad, both Carney and Ford emphasized their commitment to constructive negotiations with the U.S. Ford announced the suspension of the ad campaign to facilitate the resumption of trade talks, acknowledging its impact in reaching American audiences. As leaders prepare to attend international summits, the future of Canada-U.S. trade relations remains uncertain.
