“Rugby Coach Turned Mental Health Advocate Launches Podcast”

Date:

Chartered psychologist and rugby coach James Alder is now hosting a podcast named Trauma, Training & Transformation, where he delves into the psychological aspects of sports and training. Originally from the rugby-centric town of Wigan, England, Alder transitioned to coaching men’s rugby at Acadia University after serving in the British military for 26 years and undergoing a tour in Iraq, which led to his medical discharge in 2015 due to PTSD.

Reflecting on his military background, Alder highlighted the lack of mental preparedness training in facing the emotional toll of situations such as loss, explosions, and other traumatic events. Despite trying various therapies like counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, and medications without success, Alder pursued a new direction by enrolling in the exercise science program at the University of Winchester post his military service. Simultaneously, he commenced his PhD research focused on leveraging physical exercise to aid veterans transitioning out of the armed forces, drawing from his personal struggle with PTSD.

His journey led him to Nova Scotia, where he discovered CrossFit and found a sense of community reminiscent of his military experience. This shift marked a turning point for Alder, pulling him out of isolation and despair, towards a renewed purpose and identity. Motivated by his own positive experience with CrossFit, Alder embarked on an independent study exploring the potential of CrossFit as a sustainable coping mechanism for mental health issues, positioning it as a viable alternative to traditional treatments like therapy and medications.

With a newfound passion for mental health advocacy, Alder initiated his podcast as a platform to share his insights and experiences with others tackling mental health challenges. Through engaging discussions with various sports personalities and experts, including ex-Olympic wrestlers, fitness coaches, and rugby professionals, Alder’s podcast has touched on diverse topics such as overcoming injuries, masculinity in sports, and the pressures of competition. Notably, he conversed with former Canadian Olympic women’s rugby coach Jack Hanratty on managing the stress of competing at the highest level.

Approaching its 30th episode, the podcast is nearing the conclusion of its first season, with Alder committed to continuing these conversations and promoting mental wellness. He aims to organize wellness walks for men in the future, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue and community support in addressing mental health concerns.
