“Ontario Premier Ford Warns Against Tariffs”

Date:

Ontario Premier Doug Ford gave a commencement address at a U.S. university over the weekend, emphasizing the strong bond between Canadians and Americans and the potential negative impact of tariffs. Speaking at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Michigan, Ford spoke to a large audience of graduating students, highlighting the strained relations between Canada and the U.S. He quoted former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, warning of the consequences of tariffs on economies and jobs in both countries.

Ford shared insights from his experience in his family’s printing business and his political career, underscoring the significance of teamwork, relationships, and loyalty in achieving success. The premier also received an honorary doctorate from the university for his contributions to fostering strong ties in the Great Lakes region.

Following a controversial anti-tariff ad campaign by Ontario costing $75 million, which led to a pause in trade talks with the U.S., discussions have since resumed. Ford acknowledged his connection to the U.S., having spent years living and working there, including establishing a business in Chicago. He credited his brother Rob for his political start and highlighted the importance of accessibility and open communication in his success.

Ford concluded his address by expressing concerns about the strained relationship between Canada and the U.S., emphasizing the need for collaboration and rejecting protectionism. He encouraged graduates to uphold values of teamwork, strong relationships, and loyalty as they navigate the interconnected economies of the two nations. Ford later spoke at a second ceremony at the university, which is located in University Center, Michigan, and was established in 1963.
