“Conservative Leader Urges PM to Support New Oil Pipeline”

Date:

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the prime minister for taking a year to decide on supporting a new oil pipeline from Alberta. This came after Mark Carney mentioned that the possibility of a new pipeline is more likely due to global energy demands and the need for Canadian diversification into Asian markets. Carney highlighted progress made under a memorandum of understanding signed with Alberta, which includes commitments beyond the pipeline.

In response, Poilievre urged the prime minister to remove obstacles like the industrial carbon tax and the B.C. oil tanker ban to facilitate pipeline development. He emphasized the profitability of pipelines and the lack of necessity for government subsidies, highlighting the need for permits to proceed.

Alberta has pledged to advocate for a pipeline to Asian markets, with Indigenous co-ownership opportunities and a focus on carbon capture and storage initiatives. The Energy Minister, Tim Hodgson, expressed support for optimizing the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, emphasizing the importance of diversifying energy trade partners beyond the U.S.

Carney discussed the recent U.S. approval of the Bridger Pipeline expansion and rejected the notion of using energy as leverage in trade talks with the U.S. He emphasized the mutual interests in trade discussions and the need for strategic decisions in the energy sector.

As the North American trade pact faces a review deadline, Carney expressed confidence in its survival with necessary adjustments to benefit Canada. Poilievre highlighted the importance of leveraging energy resources for trade negotiations and security cooperation between Canada and the U.S.
