Canadians might witness another stunning northern lights display tonight, following the sun’s emission of rapid particles towards Earth. In recent days, the sun has shown activity with sunspots releasing magnetic energy and three coronal mass ejections (CMEs) of fast-moving particles. These CMEs are swiftly traveling through the solar wind towards Earth, potentially merging into a “cannibal” CME.
When these particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, the northern lights, or aurora borealis, are visible. While typically seen in northern latitudes, a strong CME could extend the display further south. The remarkable northern lights visible as far south as the Caribbean on May 10, 2024, were a result of a cannibal CME.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) predicts a potent geomagnetic storm tonight and into Friday, with levels ranging from G1 to G5. The SWPC anticipates combined CME arrival on June 4, with potential G3 storm levels thereafter.
Forecasting the northern lights is challenging, and while there is confidence in their arrival, the intensity remains uncertain. The past intense displays in 2024 were due to G5 storm levels. To catch a glimpse, one must hope for favorable conditions where the auroral hole dips southward, the sky is dark, and city lights are minimal. Capturing the lights with a phone camera is also recommended.
