Former U.S. leader Barack Obama has enlisted a group of top-tier performers to entertain guests at the inauguration of his new cultural hub. The star-studded lineup includes Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono and the Edge from U2, Eddie Vedder, and Bruce Springsteen. These artists are set to grace the stage during the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s South Side.
The live-streamed opening event for the center, which features a museum, library, and sports arena with an NBA-standard court, is scheduled for June 18 at noon ET. This coincides with the public opening on Juneteenth, a significant U.S. federal holiday.
While former President Donald Trump is unlikely to attend, he previously criticized the center, referring to it as “Obama’s belated and excessively costly ‘library.'” Trump has been focusing on the Freedom 250 program this summer, designed to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. The program included a Freedom 250 UFC event on Trump’s birthday, where fighter Josh Hokit made disparaging remarks about Michelle Obama.
Critics have accused Trump of using official events to promote his political image, especially after he labeled the celebrations as rallies. Trump’s bypassing of the bipartisan America 250 committee to establish the parallel committee, Freedom 250, has caused confusion.
Several artists withdrew from the Great American State Fair, an anniversary event associated with Trump, leading to the cancellation of their performances. Notably, Bret Michaels expressed disappointment in how the event evolved, prompting his withdrawal.
Despite the setbacks, performers like Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice are still expected to perform at the Fair. Trump considered canceling the event after some artists pulled out, announcing plans for a rally on the National Mall instead.
In contrast, America 250 is proceeding with its celebrations, including the America’s Block Party concert on July 4, featuring acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Queen Latifah, and Chris Stapleton.
The unveiling of Obama’s center comes shortly after a federal court ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center, a decision that has been partially implemented. Trump swiftly replaced the institution’s leadership in 2025, adding his name to the building.
Experts suggest that the separate events and facilities reflect a competition for attention between the Obamas and the Trumps. The Obamas’ global prestige and cultural significance contrast with the Trumps’ lack of similar legitimacy, creating a distinct difference in public perception.
Criticism has been directed at the Obama center’s design and lack of a National Archives and Records Administration facility on the premises. Despite this, the center is expected to attract around one million visitors annually, offering various amenities such as a public library branch, a high-quality basketball court, a garden, and a playground.
