A train from Canada National derailed in Saint John early Monday near the Courtenay Bay Channel and Causeway. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, through spokesperson Hugo Fontaine, confirmed being informed about the incident but provided limited details on the freight train’s cargo or the cause of derailment. No investigators have been dispatched to the scene yet. Fontaine mentioned that they are collecting information and closely monitoring the situation.
The derailment involving a CN train on a New Brunswick Southern Railway spur occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m., as stated by Fontaine. Anne McInierny, representing Irving-owned N.B. Southern Railway, clarified that the section of track where the accident happened is not owned by their company. Canadian National Railway issued a statement mentioning ongoing efforts to restore operations at the derailment site, involving two locomotives near the Courtney Bay Causeway in Saint John.
A minor engine oil spill was reported during the restoration work, but CN assured that it was contained within railway premises, posing no threat to public safety. Cleanup operations are expected to continue into the next day. The investigation into the derailment’s cause is still ongoing.
