“Bell Canada Launches Ground Station for Satellite-to-Mobile Service”

Bell Canada has achieved a significant milestone in its satellite-to-mobile coverage initiative by completing the construction of a ground station in Quebec. This progress comes following the telecommunications company’s announcement last fall of plans to introduce space-based cellular service in collaboration with Texas-based AST SpaceMobile, leveraging low-earth orbit satellites.

The ground station facility is now operational, facilitating testing and integration with AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation to merge the space-based cellular broadband network with Bell’s terrestrial network. This site will play a crucial role in supporting direct-to-device satellite service in Canada.

Integration testing has been successfully conducted at the ground station, encompassing various functionalities such as text messaging, data connectivity, voice calls, and video calls on standard smartphones. Future tests will include video streaming, public alerts, and additional features in the upcoming weeks.

The primary objective of this technology is to provide connectivity to Bell customers in areas where traditional wireless networks are not accessible, particularly in northern communities and remote coastal regions.

Mark McDonald, Bell’s executive vice-president and chief technology officer, emphasized the significance of the satellite ground infrastructure in extending connectivity to remote and underserved areas. He stated that in conjunction with Bell’s existing wireless network, this initiative will ensure seamless connectivity for customers across different locations.

Bell is targeting an early launch of its satellite coverage next year, aiming to deliver a robust and uninterrupted connectivity experience for smartphone users, as highlighted by Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer for AST SpaceMobile.

Rogers Communications Inc., a competitor, introduced its satellite-to-mobile service in collaboration with Elon Musk’s SpaceX a year ago, integrating its wireless network with Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellites to enhance cellphone connectivity in areas with poor coverage. Initially offering text messaging capabilities for beta users, Rogers later expanded services to include WhatsApp voice and video calling. The company is also working on enabling traditional cellphone calls, including 911 voice services, in the near future.
