“Scientist battling Huntington’s leads hunt for cure”

Scientist Jeff Carroll’s colleagues once advised him that he didn’t have to center his life around Huntington’s disease, a condition that claimed the lives of his grandmother and mother. Being a carrier of the gene mutation himself, he knows it’s only a matter of time before he develops the disease. Despite experiencing early signs of Huntington’s at the age of 48, Carroll has not yet succumbed to the illness. However, he has chosen to devote his life to finding a cure, stating that he might as well channel his anxiety into something productive.

Currently serving as an investigator at the Allen Institute in Seattle, Carroll is playing a pivotal role in the Brain Health accelerator, a new global research initiative unveiled recently. The project, backed by a substantial $400 million investment, including contributions from the Allen Institute, the family of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Amazon Web Services, the National Institutes of Health, and EverythingALS, aims to enhance the understanding of how brain diseases develop and advance treatment options.

The Brain Health accelerator is concentrating on various neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Lewy body dementia, and ALS. By prioritizing studies using human tissue over animal models, the initiative seeks to produce findings more pertinent to human diseases and swiftly translate them into therapies. Carroll emphasizes the importance of addressing these diseases, as they profoundly impact individuals’ core identities.

Having witnessed the devastating effects of Huntington’s disease on his mother, Carroll stresses the urgent need for effective treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. Despite years of research, breakthroughs in treatments remain elusive due to limited access to essential tools and technologies. Carroll advocates for a shift towards more effective research methods to facilitate the translation of findings into human therapies successfully.

Carroll’s journey into Huntington’s research began at the University of British Columbia under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Hayden. With ambitious goals set by the Brain Health accelerator to commence human trials by 2031, Carroll remains committed to the cause, having participated in numerous observational studies as both a scientist and someone living with the Huntington’s gene mutation.

Looking ahead, Carroll and his wife, Megan, participated in a trial of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to prevent the transmission of Huntington’s disease to their offspring. While PGD offers hope for preventing genetic diseases from being passed on, Carroll remains dedicated to finding a cure for other neurodegenerative diseases affecting current generations.
