Kenny Chaplin is determined to reclaim his Guinness World Record for the most trees planted by an individual in a 24-hour period. He originally secured the title in 2001 by planting 15,170 trees near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and held onto it for two decades before being surpassed by a competitor. Now, he is on a mission to regain the title.
Chaplin plans to transform a flat field near Buena Vista, Saskatchewan, located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Regina, into a future forest within the 24-hour window from 8 a.m. CST on June 30 to 8 a.m. CST on July 1. Expressing his excitement for the endeavor, Chaplin shared his goal of planting 24,000 trees during this period to achieve the feat.
Reflecting on his previous record-setting achievement and the growth of the trees he planted years ago, Chaplin takes pride in envisioning the new jack pine seedlings he will plant flourishing into a mature forest for the benefit of future generations. He envisions the communal forest benefiting the village of Buena Vista, with plans for walking paths, hiking trails, and recreational areas to be established in the future.
The current record holder, Antoine Moses, set the bar by planting 23,060 trees in La Crete, Alberta, on July 17, 2021. Chaplin noted the competitive nature of tree planting activities over the years and emphasized the meticulous planning behind his upcoming attempt. With his twin brother and a team of volunteers by his side, Chaplin is enlisting independent professionals as witnesses and setting up multiple cameras to ensure the planting process meets Guinness World Records standards.
David Tonken, president of Let’s Plant Trees Ltd., described Chaplin’s record attempt as a significant undertaking that highlights the importance of tree planting and the dedication of individuals who work towards forest rehabilitation annually.
