Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically passed away at the age of 54 due to an accidental drowning while vacationing in Costa Rica with his family on July 20, 2025.
Tenisha Warner, through her legal representative, expressed her efforts to privately settle her late husband’s complex estate in accordance with his wishes for their daughter, MacKenzie. She emphasized Malcolm’s intention to provide for their daughter and herself, stating the necessity of taking legal action to secure their rights before any potential legal time limits expired.
The legal dispute centers on a trust established in 1996 prior to Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s relationship with Tenisha and their daughter’s birth. The trust primarily benefits other family members, with Pamela Warner receiving the majority share alongside his father and half-sister. Allegations in the court documents claim that funds from life insurance and retirement accounts, exceeding $1.25 million US, have already been distributed to these beneficiaries.
Tenisha Warner’s petition outlines unmet financial commitments by Malcolm-Jamal Warner before his passing, including a $1,000,000 US life insurance policy naming her as the sole beneficiary, an annual $50,542.46 US gift provision, $30,500 US for Roth IRA funding, and $195,000 US for salary payments to Tenisha in her designated role. Additionally, the petition highlights a premarital agreement mandating the establishment of a college fund for their daughter.
