Gasoline Spill Prompts Evacuations in B.C. Community

Date:

A spill of around 1,000 liters of gasoline at a Petro-Canada gas station in Warfield, B.C., led to evacuations from nearby residences on Wednesday. The incident occurred during a fuel delivery at the station located on Schofield Highway in the community near Trail, B.C. Emergency responders were called to address the spill behind the gas station, where storage tanks are positioned close to homes.

Tammy Hill, a resident living near the tanks, mentioned that the proximity of the tanks to residential properties raises concerns, especially during fuel deliveries. This incident follows a previous spill in June 2023, highlighting ongoing worries about living adjacent to fuel storage and delivery activities.

Another resident, Chris Morassut, also had to evacuate his home due to the spill. Morassut expressed frustration over the lack of transparency in monitoring and sharing information about the gas station operations. The community is seeking more openness and involvement in overseeing the facility to prevent future incidents.

Petro-Canada stated that the spill occurred during a tank refueling process and that an investigation is underway to determine the cause. The B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks indicated that the spilled material was contained on site and that compliance reviews are being conducted. However, residents like Morassut remain skeptical and are calling for more definitive reassurances and thorough investigations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
