“Vet Anesthetizes Oyster to Save Heron in Wildlife Rescue”

Date:

Dr. Adrian Walton, the owner and chief veterinarian at Dewdney Animal Hospital, encountered an unusual incident recently involving a Pacific great blue heron and an oyster. The heron had its toe ensnared in an 18-centimeter mollusk, posing a potentially life-threatening situation for the bird. Walton, expressing astonishment, mentioned that it was the first time he had dealt with an “oyster attack” and had to anesthetize an oyster.

The heron was discovered by a biologist from the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Society in False Creek. The bird was in distress, struggling to swim and stand as the tide rose, which raised concerns about its survival. Recognizing the urgency, the biologist contacted the B.C. Wildlife Response Team for assistance.

Upon arrival, the rescue team found the heron trapped by a large oyster weighing over 300 grams, a significant portion of the bird’s weight. Removing the oyster became a collaborative effort involving experts in various fields, including aquarists, wildlife technicians, and a wildlife veterinarian. Walton, drawing on his expertise in fish farming, devised a plan to safely extract the oyster without causing harm to the bird.

Utilizing a specialized anesthetic, the team successfully opened the oyster, freeing the heron’s foot. Despite sustaining ligament damage and requiring a toe amputation, the heron is expected to fully recover after receiving antibiotics and pain management at the B.C. Wildlife Association’s Burnaby Lake facility. The successful rescue of the heron is particularly significant as blue herons are classified as a species at risk in British Columbia.

As for the oyster, it was deemed inedible but will be preserved as a keepsake by the rescuers. The incident underscores the importance of wildlife preservation and the swift action taken to ensure the heron’s safe return to its natural habitat during the fledging season.
