“Akisqnuk First Nation Leads Eco Study on Lake Boating”

Date:

The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation is initiating a series of scientific and economic investigations on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of a comprehensive water stewardship plan, stirring discussions on recreational boating in the region.

Chief of ʔAkisq̓nuk, Donald Sam, emphasized the significance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people, stating that decisions must be based on credible data. The First Nation is allocating $200,000 to map the East Kootenay lakes, evaluate shoreline conditions, sediment movement, and assess the economic impact of recreational activities.

These stewardship deliberations have raised concerns among some residents worried about potential restrictions affecting the local economy. Chief Sam clarified that the aim is not to hinder economic development but to identify compatible recreational activities that align with the lakes’ long-term well-being.

The studies coincide with heightened scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, which are believed to disrupt sediment, harm shorelines, and contribute to environmental deterioration in smaller lakes like Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake. Both lakes are shallow, making them vulnerable to wake disturbance and shoreline erosion.

Community groups like Lake Windemere Ambassadors already advocate for responsible boating practices to preserve the lakes’ health. Chief Sam suggested that traditional boating and fishing may be more sustainable on these relatively narrow lakes.

District of Invermere Mayor, Al Miller, expressed support for a science-based approach to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic considerations with environmental protection. Mayor Miller stressed the need to make informed decisions based on data rather than hearsay.

Chief Sam highlighted that the stewardship planning process is in its early stages, assuring that no immediate restrictions are under consideration for this summer. He emphasized the importance of community engagement and information sharing in shaping a long-term lake stewardship plan that harmonizes environmental preservation with economic prosperity.
