“Alberta Hospitals Brace for Severe Flu Season Surge”

Date:

Alberta hospitals are facing a surge of flu patients during a challenging period, with doctors expecting the situation to worsen as the peak of the respiratory virus season approaches. Dr. Paul Parks, president-elect of the Alberta Medical Association’s emergency medicine section, expressed concerns over the overwhelming pressure on emergency departments across the province.

Experts have cautioned that this flu season may be particularly severe, evident in the rising hospitalizations and a flu positivity rate of 17.8% – higher than the usual rate for this time of year. As of November 29, 519 Albertans had been hospitalized due to influenza, with 31 ICU admissions and 15 fatalities reported.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) facilities are experiencing heightened patient demand, especially in emergency departments, due to respiratory illnesses. At Alberta Children’s Hospital, Dr. Sidd Thakore noted a significant increase in flu cases across all age groups. AHS has implemented over-capacity and surge plans to manage the situation, including the addition of temporary beds during the current respiratory virus season.

Dr. Parks highlighted the strain on hospital capacity, exacerbated by factors like population growth, health system restructuring, and low vaccination rates. The lack of available beds has led to delays in care for patients requiring surgery or cancer treatment. Immunization rates for influenza and COVID have dropped, with only a small percentage of Albertans vaccinated this season.

AHS emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing severe illness and urged the public to get vaccinated. Thakore stressed the risks faced by vulnerable populations, including young children and individuals with underlying health conditions. While severe complications from influenza are rare, the potential for serious outcomes, such as encephalitis, remains a concern.

In response to criticisms, the government defended its healthcare policies, stating that hospitals are operating within typical capacity levels for the flu season. They emphasized the importance of flu vaccination and reassured the public about the ongoing management of respiratory viruses in healthcare facilities.
