Canada’s Bianca Andreescu secured a spot in the second round of the Italian Open tennis tournament by defeating Sofia Kenin from the United States with a score of 6-4, 7-5 in Rome. Andreescu capitalized on five out of six break-point opportunities and delivered five aces during the one hour and 46-minute match. Kenin, on the other hand, only managed to convert three out of six chances to break Andreescu’s serve, resulting in a 2-5 win-loss record against her. Despite Kenin’s recent victory over Andreescu in the Charleston Open, the Canadian will now face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, the 12th seed, in the upcoming WTA 1000 clay-court match scheduled for Wednesday at 4 a.m. ET. Andreescu, aged 25 and hailing from Mississauga, Ont., entered the tournament ranked 137th on the WTA Tour following a series of injury setbacks in recent years. With a current season record of 21-8, most of her victories have been secured in the lower-tier WTA 125 and World Tennis Tour competitions.
