Australia was the pioneer in implementing a ban on teen social media use, and Canada’s federal government is hinting at taking a similar step soon. According to a recent Angus Reid poll, 75 percent of Canadians are in favor of this initiative.
Despite the recognition of the negative impact of social media on young individuals, the solution is not straightforward. Taylor Owen, the Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics, and Communications at McGill University, who is part of the federal government’s expert advisory group on online safety and AI strategy taskforce, argues that a ban is not a cure-all. He emphasizes the importance of enhancing social media safety for all users.
