Reporting from Ukraine’s embattled Donetsk region, Major Oleksandr discussed the ongoing situation but occasionally diverted his attention to a nearby monitor displaying Ukrainian drone activity near Kostyantynivka.
Kostyantynivka is a critical area along the extensive frontline.
“There are attempts to advance toward the city center. While some succeed, our brigade and other forces thwart them daily,” revealed Oleksandr to CBC News.
He is known by the callsign Perepel, meaning quail, and serves as the chief of staff for the drone battalion Spalakh under the 28th Mechanized Brigade. Following Ukrainian military protocol, his full name remains undisclosed.
Utilizing reconnaissance and combat drones in the expanding “grey zone” near Kostyantynivka, Oleksandr mentioned that the area, where his team operates, has widened from 3 to 5 kilometers to 15 to 20 kilometers.
The proliferation of drones in the sky impedes troop movements and the transport of vehicles and armaments for both sides.
Amid Ukraine’s ongoing resistance against Russia’s invasion, military experts suggest that Ukraine may hold a tactical advantage in some regions, regaining territory and hindering Russian advances. However, they caution against overstating Ukrainian progress due to the impact of drone warfare, creating a complex and volatile grey zone along parts of the front.

Ukraine’s Advances
The distinction between Russian and Ukrainian forces has become increasingly blurred.
“This creates a vast area where it’s challenging to determine exact control of territories… Positions are intertwined,” explained Yurri Clavilier, a research analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Defence and Military Analysis Programme.
“It’s challenging to categorize it as we could three years ago.”
In a recent battlefield assessment on May 20, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War in Washington noted that Ukrainian forces seem to be regaining the tactical advantage in various frontline sectors.
Researchers observed that Ukraine’s counterattacks in recent months have led to its most significant battlefield gains since entering Russia’s Kursk oblast in August 2024.
Notably, Ukraine recaptured a substantial portion of Kupiansk last year and has made territorial gains in the western Zaporizhzhia region more recently.

Reports of Russian Losses
Recently, Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that Ukrainian forces inflicted casualties on Russian troops in April at a rate surpassing Moscow’s recruitment capacity.
During a virtual NATO meeting, Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Ukrainian Armed Forces commander-in-chief, claimed that around a thousand Russian soldiers are killed or wounded daily.
Estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of Russian military personnel have died. Independent sources indicate that over 350,
