“Canada Joins Eurovision: Ready to Shine on Global Stage”

Date:

Canada is set to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking a thrilling moment for fans of extravagant talent shows and quirky musical performances. The news was revealed by CBC/Radio-Canada and the European Broadcasting Union shortly after CBC’s full membership confirmation within the EBU. Marie-Philippe Bouchard, the president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, expressed excitement about bringing the globally renowned music event to Canadians on Canada Day.

The upcoming 71st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted by Bulgaria next year, known as a platform that propels songwriters, singers, and musicians into the spotlight. Recognized for its dazzling pyrotechnics, flamboyant costumes, and uniquely bizarre acts, the Eurovision Song Contest has garnered a strong following in Canada.

In the previous year, Canada impressively ranked among the top three countries in the “Rest of the World” vote. Canadian attendees, enthusiastic about the event, were among the highest ticket buyers from outside Europe, flocking to Vienna, Austria, to witness the semi-finals and grand final in May.

Martin Green, the director of the Eurovision Song Contest, welcomed CBC/Radio-Canada to the Eurovision family, highlighting the global appeal of the competition. Notably, in 1988, a young Céline Dion clinched victory at the Eurovision Song Contest, a triumph that significantly influenced her illustrious career. Other Canadian acts, such as Natasha St-Pier and La Zarra from Montreal, have also graced the Eurovision stage in subsequent years.

Despite its popularity, the Eurovision Song Contest has not been devoid of controversy. Earlier this year, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Slovenia boycotted the event over Israel’s participation during the Gaza conflict. While a proposal to exclude Israel from future contests was rejected, the country’s involvement remains a contentious issue.

Canada’s entry into the Eurovision Song Contest marks the first addition of a new country since Australia in 2015. CBC/Radio-Canada plans to disclose the selection process for Canada’s representative in the competition later this year.
