“Eating Boosts T-Cell Efficiency, Study Finds”

Date:

In a recent study published in the journal Nature, researchers have discovered that T-cells, a type of white blood cell crucial for fighting infections, become more efficient after a meal. Greg Delgoffe, an immunologist at the University of Pittsburgh and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, likened these T-cells to a vigilant army tasked with eliminating viruses, bacteria, and precancerous cells from the body.

The study involved collecting blood samples from 31 healthy volunteers at two different time points in a day: in the morning after fasting overnight and six hours later after a meal. The results showed that after eating, T-cells exhibited enhanced functionality by absorbing fats and sugars more effectively and possessing more efficient mitochondria for energy production.

Furthermore, the research indicated that consuming a balanced diet plays a significant role in enhancing immune responses. This insight could potentially lead to advancements in immune therapies and aid in optimizing the timing of vaccinations. Russell Jones, chair of metabolism and nutritional programming at Van Andel Institute, emphasized the importance of a balanced diet for overall health, whether combating a cold or cancer.

The study also explored the impact of nutrition on cancer treatments, particularly on chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapies that modify T-cells to better target cancer cells. The findings revealed that T-cells from individuals who had eaten prior were more effective in controlling cancer compared to those from fasting individuals.

Overall, these findings underscore the interconnectedness between diet, metabolism, and immunity, particularly in the context of cancer treatment. The study’s implications suggest the potential development of tailored diet plans to enhance immune responses and improve the effectiveness of existing cancer therapies.
