Authorities in Southern California are working urgently to prevent a potential explosion of a storage tank leaking a hazardous chemical used in plastic production. Approximately 40,000 people are currently under evacuation orders in the affected area.
The incident occurred when a storage tank containing between 22,700 and 26,500 litres of methyl methacrylate overheated and started releasing vapours into the air at an aerospace plastics facility in Garden Grove, Orange County. Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey expressed concerns that the tank could rupture, leading to a chemical spill or even an explosion.
Evacuation orders were initially issued for residents in Garden Grove and later expanded to include residents in Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster. The leak at GKN Aerospace, a facility producing parts for aircraft, proved challenging to contain overnight.
Despite the situation, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities. Authorities have managed to stabilize the tank’s temperature temporarily while devising a plan to address the issue.
Residents, like Danny Pham, were caught off guard by the sudden evacuation orders. Pham, living near the plant, had to leave with minimal belongings and find refuge elsewhere. Meanwhile, containment measures, such as sandbag barriers, have been put in place to prevent any potential chemical spill from reaching water bodies.
Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county health officer, highlighted the health risks associated with the chemical’s vapours, which can cause respiratory problems and other health issues. Efforts are ongoing to address the crisis, with specialized hazardous material teams assessing the situation at GKN Aerospace.
Local residents, including Kim Yen, have expressed concerns about the language barrier affecting evacuation alerts and urged the community to heed official instructions for their safety. The Vietnamese community in Garden Grove has been particularly impacted by the incident, with local authorities and media outlets working to ensure critical information is disseminated effectively.
The situation remains fluid, with continuous updates being provided to ensure the safety of residents and responders. Efforts are underway to address the crisis and prevent any further escalation of the hazardous situation.
