Entertainment Icons Unite Against Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger

Date:

More than a thousand prominent figures in the entertainment industry, including actors, writers, and directors, have voiced their strong disapproval of the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Their concerns were expressed in an open letter released on Monday, highlighting the potential negative impact of the $111 billion merger on the industry.

Notable names such as Denis Villeneuve, Kristen Stewart, J.J. Abrams, and Joaquin Phoenix have joined forces to oppose the deal, citing fears of job losses, reduced opportunities for creators, increased costs, and limited choices for audiences. The letter, published on BlocktheMerger.com, emphasizes that the consolidation of these two major studios would leave only four major U.S. film studios in operation.

The merger between Paramount Skydance, led by David Ellison, and Warner Bros. Discovery is awaiting shareholder approval and regulatory clearance after a successful deal in late February. Paramount Skydance has reassured that both studios will continue to operate independently, promising to release a combined total of 30 movies annually in theaters. However, acknowledging the merger’s potential for duplications, Paramount anticipates significant cuts as a result.

In response to the concerns raised in the open letter, Paramount defended the merger, asserting that it would provide more opportunities for creators rather than limiting them. The studio emphasized that the combined strengths of the two entities would enhance project approvals, support talent development, and expand global audience reach.

Despite Paramount’s assurances, many industry insiders fear that the merger will lead to widespread job losses and a concentration of power within the industry. The letter, organized by a coalition of advocacy groups including the Committee for the First Amendment, the Democracy Defenders Fund, and the Future Film Coalition, expresses deep concerns that prioritizing the interests of a select few stakeholders could compromise the integrity, independence, and diversity of the entertainment sector.

The letter was signed by a host of industry figures, including Ben Stiller, Don Cheadle, Javier Bardem, Lily Gladstone, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tiffany Haddish, Ted Danson, and others. Damon Lindelof, known for his work on “Watchmen” and “Lost,” also shared his perspective on the merger, highlighting the potential consequences for job opportunities and creative output in Hollywood.

Warner Bros. representatives have yet to respond to requests for comments on the open letter, as the debate over the proposed merger continues to unfold.
