Ontario to Expand Private Clinics for Orthopedic Surgeries

Date:

Ontario’s Health Minister Sylvia Jones revealed plans to further enhance private clinics offering publicly funded health services starting early next year. The initiative will focus on introducing four centers dedicated to hip and knee replacement surgeries as part of a $125 million investment over two years to accommodate up to 20,000 orthopedic procedures at community clinics.

The government has already broadened the scope of private healthcare delivery for cataract surgeries, MRI and CT scans, with over 40,000 eye surgeries and numerous MRI and CT scan hours conducted in the past year. This expansion aims to increase the percentage of patients receiving these procedures within recommended timeframes from 80% to 90%, ensuring improved efficiency.

While critics suggest allocating funds to public hospitals, Minister Jones emphasized the importance of leveraging existing surgical and diagnostic centers in communities to enhance accessibility for patients. The province currently boasts over 900 privately operated clinics, primarily focusing on diagnostic imaging services.

The designated clinics for hip and knee surgeries include OV Surgical Centre in Toronto, Academic Orthopedic Surgical Associates of Ottawa, Windsor Orthopedic Surgical Centre, and Schroeder Ambulatory Centre in Richmond Hill. Notably, the non-profit Schroeder Ambulatory Centre was previously highlighted by Premier Doug Ford in an announcement last June, where the government committed $155 million for the establishment of 57 new centers for MRI, CT scans, and gastrointestinal endoscopy services.
