An unusual occurrence took place at a farm in Nanaimo, B.C., where an emu with four legs hatched recently, sparking curiosity among the owners and veterinarians. Celina Knuff, a co-owner of Back to Nature Acres Farm, expressed astonishment at the unprecedented event on their 21-acre blueberry farm, which is home to various animals including emus, chickens, pigs, sheep, and cattle.
Knuff mentioned that despite hatching around 11 chicks this year without any issues, the unique situation of the four-legged emu chick has left her seeking more information as she hasn’t come across a live emu hatch like this before. The chick was born under incubation and, although currently alert and content, it is yet to stand up and clear its bowels, raising concerns about potential internal complications that could impact its survival.
Efforts are being made to address the challenges faced by the chick, with one of its feet showing signs of curling. Knuff has been applying massages and bandages to aid in straightening the foot. Dr. Tyler Stitt from Winchelsea Veterinary Services in Nanaimo described the case as fascinating, highlighting the rarity of such disfigurements in his veterinary experience.
Potential causes for the extra legs on the emu chick include temperature irregularities during incubation, environmental contaminants, inbreeding, or absorption of a possible twin. Stitt emphasized the importance of the chick being able to defecate for its survival chances, indicating that if this issue persists, the chick may not make it.
Looking ahead, if the chick proves to be viable, Knuff intends to transfer it to a rescue organization capable of providing the necessary care and resources. Given the impending blueberry harvest and their upcoming relocation to Nova Scotia, self-care for the emu chick is not feasible for Knuff and her husband. Their hope is that by entrusting the emu to a rescue facility, it will have the best opportunity for a successful future.
