Two individuals who crossed paths in London, Ontario, in the 1990s after immigrating from Europe have emerged as the recipients of the largest lottery prize in Canada’s history. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) revealed on Thursday that Greg S. and Krys P., whose full surnames were not disclosed, secured a grand total of $80,403,285.40 from the Lotto Max draw on December 30. This sum includes the $80 million jackpot and an additional $403,285.40 from the second prize in the combination play category. Their remarkable win surpasses the $80 million jackpot claimed in British Columbia the previous year.
Recalling the moment of realization, Greg expressed his initial disbelief upon seeing the words “Big Winner” and the number 80 on the OLG app. He recounted checking the amount again, noticing the eight, zeros, and commas, and finally comprehending that the prize amounted to $80 million. The duo, who initially met in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class years ago, developed a friendship and bonded over their shared interest in playing the lottery. According to OLG, they exclusively purchase tickets when the jackpot reaches substantial amounts.
Krys vividly remembered the morning when Greg’s wife called to convey the life-changing news. Rushing to Greg’s residence to verify the ticket and share the jubilation, Krys acknowledged Greg’s consistent effort in procuring the tickets over time. The winning ticket was bought from Happy Day’s Mini Mart on Aldersbrook Road in London.
Having dedicated 28 years of diligent work, Greg, who never missed a day in manufacturing, and Krys, who works lengthy 12-hour shifts in a factory, are contemplating their next steps following the windfall. Greg emphasized the surreal nature of the situation, noting that while he had been playing the lottery for years, he never anticipated such an extraordinary outcome. Seeking guidance from a financial advisor on potential investment avenues, Greg emphasized the need for careful deliberation.
Meanwhile, Krys outlined his immediate plans for the newfound wealth, including acquiring a new home and car, as well as exploring tropical destinations.
