The family of Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has reported that she remains in critical condition following her transfer to a hospital in Tehran due to increased international pressure regarding her declining health. Mohammadi, a human rights activist, was moved from Zanjan medical center to Pars Hospital in Tehran after collapsing in prison over a week ago.
Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, expressed concern over her precarious state, attributing her health complications to mistreatment, prolonged confinement, and neglect by authorities. He emphasized that Mohammadi’s transfer to Pars Hospital was only prompted by significant pressure, hoping that she would now receive the necessary medical attention.
Mohammadi, a prominent advocate for women’s rights, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while incarcerated and has faced repeated imprisonments throughout her career. Her recent arrest in Mashhad led to her deteriorating health, exacerbated by physical abuse during her detainment. She suffered a heart attack earlier this year and has been dealing with a blood clot in her lung, requiring continuous monitoring and treatment.
Following her admission to the Zanjan hospital’s cardiac care unit, Mohammadi’s health has been unstable, with fluctuating blood pressure and reliance on oxygen support. Her family had been urging authorities to transfer her to Tehran for better medical care, and she is currently receiving intensive treatment in the coronary care unit at Pars Hospital.
Amidst growing concerns for Mohammadi’s well-being, her lawyer, Chirinne Ardakani, highlighted that international pressure played a crucial role in securing the temporary suspension of her prison sentence. Ardakani emphasized the need for ongoing advocacy to secure the release of all political prisoners facing execution risks in Iran.
Mohammadi’s legal team continues to push for the dismissal of all charges against her, stressing that a temporary reprieve is insufficient given her critical condition. Her son, Ali Rahmani, demanded a permanent end to her judicial persecution, following her recent sentencing to a 7½-year prison term.
The Nobel committee has called for Mohammadi’s immediate release and access to specialized medical care in Tehran, underscoring the urgency of her situation. Rahmani stressed the importance of providing his mother with long-term specialized care to ensure her recovery and prevent any further threats to her life.
