A recent underwater expedition off the coast of Alexandria has led archaeologists to believe they have discovered an ancient pleasure barge from beneath the sediment. The vessel, dating back to the early first century AD, was found near the island of Antirhodos, part of Alexandria’s historic port. Measuring approximately 35 meters in length, the boat features a pavilion in the center, likely adorned with luxurious decorations.
This discovery, part of ongoing underwater explorations conducted by marine archaeologist Franck Goddio and the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry for Antiquities, sheds light on a previously elusive aspect of Egyptian history. The findings have been documented by the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology.
The vessel’s unique design, characterized by a flat-bottomed bow and a rounded stern, aligns with ancient depictions of pleasure barges known as “thalamegos.” These opulent boats, popular among the elite of ancient Egypt, were used for leisurely journeys along the Nile. The unearthed vessel’s resemblance to historical artwork and descriptions further supports its identification as a thalamegos.
While the boat’s purpose as a pleasure barge seems probable, there is also a competing theory suggesting it may have served a religious function. Goddio speculates that the vessel could have been associated with the nearby temple of Isis and used in religious ceremonies. The boat’s preservation under sediment, likely due to catastrophic events in AD 50, has allowed researchers to study it in detail without disturbing its integrity.
The significance of this discovery extends beyond its historical value, offering insights into the maritime activities along the Nile during ancient times. The team has conducted thorough examinations of the vessel, including wood sampling for dating and creating 3D models from detailed photographs. Following UNESCO guidelines, the boat has been reburied in its original location to ensure its preservation, unless Egyptian authorities decide otherwise in the future.
Goddio emphasizes the complexity of safely removing the vessel from its underwater resting place without causing damage, highlighting the need for careful consideration and respect for its 2,000-year-old history.
