Nearly twenty-four months following a tragic shooting incident, two mothers came together in a heartfelt embrace, vowing to move past a painful chapter in their lives. Kristen Windigo, the mother of victim Keilia, expressed her forgiveness towards the individual who admitted guilt in the shooting death of her daughter. The unidentified mother of the young man also stated their intention to cherish the memory of both individuals together.
Both mothers were present at the sentencing in Fort Qu’Appelle, where Judge Kevin Lang imposed the maximum youth sentence for manslaughter. Tearfully, Kristen Windigo gazed at her daughter’s assailant, offering forgiveness and best wishes, a gesture the judge praised as “powerful.”
The tragic incident occurred during Keilia’s 18th birthday celebration at her residence in Wolseley, Sask., in August 2024. Recounting the events in her victim impact statement, Windigo described how what should have been a day of happiness turned into a nightmare before their eyes.
The perpetrator, who was a minor at the time and remains unnamed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, confessed to the crime last month. The individual will serve a three-year sentence, with credit for three months already spent in custody.
During the court proceedings, Crown attorney Pamela Larmondin advocated for the harshest penalty, highlighting that the teen had recklessly handled a firearm and pointed it at Keilia before the fatal shot. Judge Lang characterized the shooting as a tragic display of immaturity rather than premeditation, noting the offender’s remorse, acceptance of responsibility, and willingness to undergo personal growth while incarcerated.
Praising the Crown’s decision not to pursue an adult sentence, Judge Lang closed the hearing with an acknowledgment of the emotional weight carried by both families. Outside the courtroom, the two mothers found solace in each other’s support, embracing as they looked towards a future of healing and unity.
Windigo emphasized the importance of forgiveness in their journey towards closure, emphasizing that resentment and sorrow cannot bring back her beloved daughter. She fondly remembered Keilia as a compassionate soul with a bright future ahead, expressing the ongoing loss felt by her absence.
