“Poaching Probe at Point Pelee Sparks Outrage”

Date:

Parks Canada is currently probing a suspected case of poaching involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 within the park’s marsh area. Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious individuals or vehicles in the vicinity.

The government agency emphasized that poaching is a severe violation under the Canada National Parks Act. To aid in the investigation, officials are requesting dashcam footage from the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas during the specified timeframe.

Debra Parker, a frequent visitor to Point Pelee, expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that a nesting female swan was likely the target based on photos provided by a fellow park visitor. She described the situation as disturbing and stressed the urgency of identifying those responsible.

Melissa Hargreaves, another park visitor, recounted observing the female swan peacefully tending to her nest the day before the incident. She described the swan’s calm demeanor and expressed sadness over the poaching, hoping for the swift apprehension and maximum punishment of the perpetrators.

Larry Strung, a resident of Wallaceburg with a passion for photography, shared his experience of encountering the swans at the park and expressed shock at the harm inflicted on them. He highlighted the beauty and grace of the swans, emphasizing the impact of the incident on their natural habitat and mating patterns.

The community is rallying behind efforts to uncover the truth and hold those accountable for the tragic event. The public is urged to come forward with any relevant information that could assist in the investigation.
