“Remains of Gaza Hostage Returned in Ceasefire Progress”

Date:

The Israeli military confirmed on Tuesday that the remains of a hostage from Gaza have been transferred to Israel, marking progress following the U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Prior to this, Hamas had already returned the remains of 20 hostages to Israel since the ceasefire commenced on October 10. With the latest transfer, there remain seven bodies yet to be repatriated from Gaza.

The ceasefire’s primary objective is to de-escalate the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group, which has been the deadliest and most destructive confrontation to date. Earlier on Tuesday, Hamas’ military wing reported retrieving the body of an Israeli soldier in Gaza with intentions to hand over the remains. However, Israel did not confirm if the recovered remains belonged to a soldier.

In recent days, Gaza militants have been gradually releasing the bodies of hostages, with Israel urging for a quicker repatriation process. Despite some discrepancies where Israel disputed the identities of certain remains, Hamas attributed delays to the extensive damage in Gaza, complicating the identification process.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, for each hostage returned by Hamas, Israel has reciprocated by releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians. Presently, 270 Palestinian bodies have been returned under this agreement, with less than half positively identified due to limited DNA testing resources in Gaza. The Health Ministry in Gaza has resorted to posting images of the remains online in the hope of aiding families in recognition.

The conflict arose from a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and 251 individuals being taken hostage according to Israeli reports. In response, Israel launched a significant military operation that led to the deaths of over 68,800 Palestinians in Gaza, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry. Despite allegations of genocide by a UN commission, Israel has refuted the claims and contested the casualty figures provided by the Ministry without presenting an alternative count.
