Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday to address discussions on Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and long-range strike options. The two leaders engaged in talks over the weekend regarding the potential supply of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv, with a Ukrainian delegation led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko set to visit Washington ahead of the meeting.
Kyiv has been actively advocating for the acquisition of U.S.-produced Tomahawk missiles, emphasizing their intended use solely for military targets and not as a provocation towards Moscow. Russian officials have expressed concerns, viewing such a move as a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions.
Zelenskyy mentioned briefing Trump on the required quantity of Tomahawks Ukraine seeks, as Trump, displaying growing discontent with Russia, has shown interest in providing the missiles to Ukraine while also considering discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the matter.
In addition to the missile talks, Ukraine and the U.S. are nearing a significant agreement involving the sharing of drone technology, seen as a strategic move to maintain U.S. support for Ukraine. Amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the prolonged conflict, Zelenskyy highlighted the need for discussions with U.S. energy companies to address Ukraine’s evolving energy needs in response to Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
Recent Russian actions targeting Ukrainian energy facilities have prompted concerns, with Ukraine resorting to counterattacks on Russian oil refineries, resulting in gasoline shortages. The ongoing conflict, now in its fourth year, has seen heightened tensions as Russia intensifies strikes and gains ground on the battlefield.
