Rubio Holds Talks with Pope Amid Trump-Pope Tensions

Date:

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Pope Leo at the Vatican to discuss diplomatic matters following President Donald Trump’s recent criticisms of the pope. Trump had been targeting Leo for his stance on the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, falsely accusing him of supporting Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In response, Pope Leo clarified that the Catholic Church has always been against nuclear weapons and advocates for peace through dialogue rather than conflict. Despite this, Trump persisted in his claims during a television appearance, emphasizing his opposition to Iran possessing nuclear arms.

Rubio, acting as Trump’s national security adviser and a Catholic, faced the challenge of justifying the diplomatic meeting amid the ongoing tensions. The discussions between Rubio and Pope Leo covered topics such as religious freedom, the Catholic Church’s growth in Africa, and humanitarian aid to Cuba.

Notably, Vatican commentator Thomas Reese highlighted the limited common ground between the Vatican and the Trump administration, citing religious freedom as a potential area of cooperation. However, he noted the Vatican’s resistance to coercion from external forces.

The meeting between Rubio and Leo also touched on Middle East issues and mutual commitments to peace and human dignity. Furthermore, it aimed to address domestic political concerns, particularly with U.S. midterm elections approaching and the need to maintain support from conservative Catholic voters.

Looking ahead, Rubio is scheduled to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a former ally of Trump. However, Trump’s criticisms of Pope Leo have strained relations with Meloni, prompting a public exchange of disapproval between the two leaders. Rubio’s role now involves navigating these political dynamics to foster continued support from key allies.
